Awe of God: What if This is Your Next Step in Strengthening Your Faith?

Whether your faith is at a stand still or you are actively trying to grow your faith, being more in awe of God is something we can all seek.

It’s so interesting when we read something in the Bible and then the next time we read the same text, God reveals something more to us and we sit in the full awe of the Lord. He really does reveal certain lessons to us in His perfect timing depending on what we’re going through, what He wants us to share with someone else, and what our next step of obedience to Him is.

The Posture of our Heart - It Matters More Than We Realize

Let’s go back to creation in Genesis, where we’ll look at post-creation and Noah’s ark. There was absolute wickedness in the world, which most definitely relates to today because there is wickedness in the hearts of many all around us. This is why as followers of Christ we must continue to be bold in the faith and grow in awe of the Lord in remembrance of what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do.

How sad is it that God created us in His image and this is what mankind had already come to: “The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled” (Genesis 6:5-6). It is because of this evil in our hearts that He wiped from the face of the earth the human race that He had created, along with the animals because He had regretted that He made them.

But guess who the Lord had His eyes on - Noah. “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8). In the account of Noah and His family, it says that Noah walked faithfully with God. Noah also had a specific calling on His life “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed” (Genesis 5:29). When the Lord creates you with a specific calling (which He has called everyone to something) He will carry it out until completion. Are you tuning your ears into this calling?

Faith Produces Action

With this calling, the Lord instructed Noah exactly how to build the ark - what he would need to build it, the amounts of each material, and who he was to bring with him onto the ark. The Lord told Noah that everything on earth will perish, “But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you” (Genesis 6:18). Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

While every other living thing was perishing, God kept Noah safe and the living things He instructed him to take - all because he found favor in the eyes of the Lord and obeyed what the Lord told him to do. Noah had to take action on building the ark in order to be saved from the destruction. To hear God but not do what He says will lead to destruction - He is trying to save you, let Him.

Every living thing was wiped off the earth, “Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark” (Genesis 7:23). Wow, this is literally what is happening today. While everyone is perishing and headed towards destruction, God has His face shining upon us and is telling us who to bring to Him so that we will all be saved. Who is God telling you to bring into the ark with you?

As the water continued to flood the earth, the Bible says, “But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded” (Genesis 8:1). Please always remember that God sees you in the middle of the storm and He will make the rain stop, but there is a purpose in the flood.

The Purpose in the Flood

God told Noah when to come out of the ark and what to bring out with him. Noah then sacrificed some of the animals to the Lord. Through Noah’s sacrifice to the Lord when the earth was finally completely dry, the Lord was so pleased that said in His heart, “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done” (Genesis 8:21).

God then blessed Noah and his sons and He gave him everything for food, whereas before He had originally only given green plants for food. He provided for them what He knew their body would need for generations. God then established His covenant with Noah and the descendants after him: “ I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:11). Do you know what’s so beautiful about this and how we remember this today? “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:  I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Genesis 9:12-13). God says whenever He brings the clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears, He will remember this everlasting covenant with us. He always keeps His promises. This is a sign of His protection and provision. Let’s be more in awe of Him by remembering how He set the foundations of the earth in place and what this means for us today. This can be an essential step in strengthening your faith.

Prayer & Application - Strengthening your Faith

God loves us. He loves His people and desires mercy, not destruction. May we continue to be in awe of Him this week and remember the covenant He made with all of the earth. This is a sign of His protection and provision.

Lord, thank you that even though humans have all sorts of evil in our hearts, that you remember your people and show us what to build for you. May you put the desire and obedience of repentance in the hearts of your people this week. We will always remember your covenant, Lord. Amen.
